Recruiters specialize in finding people. Not doing what you do.
So, unless they have worked on a number of searches in your field, they will not understand the details of your profession.
The hiring manager simply gives them a list of qualifications and they compare it to you. If your background is not a clear match, the recruiter might miss it.
And, the recruiter has a reason to be wary of people who don't readily appear to be a fit.
For, many unqualified people try to pass themselves off as qualified candidates. And, if the recruiter presents someone who is unqualified, she risks losing her credibility with her client.
If an erroneously rejected candidate is patient and helps a recruiter who is in over her head, he might be able to make a good case for herself.
Many of the candidates who do this however, think they are qualified when, for whatever reason, they are not what the client wants.
