Fear of Linkedin
Linkedin is a huge online database of professional profiles.
In the past, many people did not want to put their resumes in job board resume banks.
Supposedly, the boss would discover the resume and assume that you were planning to desert him. So, he would protect himself by hiring someone to replace you before you left.
Did it ever happen? I don't know.
Some people avoid Linkedin for the same reason. However, things have changed.
We're now well into the internet age. Most companies are represented online and most individuals are too. It's no longer a sin to let people know who you are.
Who Uses Linkedin?
Linkedin used to be completely free.
Now they limit the options available with a free account but they still have free accounts which are very useful.
So, recruiters inside companies and recruiters in outside agencies all check Linkedin for leads.
Benefits
If you put your profile on Linkedin you might get a call from a recruiter calling about a job that would be a step forward for you.
It costs you nothing and once you have your profile up, you don't have to do anything. People come to you.
That's terrific.
Negatives
Now, you might get more calls than you want. And you might get some ignorant recruiters calling you. They don't really understand the job they are working on so they call you when it should be obvious that you are not an appropriate
Still, that's a small price to pay for putting your profile in front of people who might be able to do something for you. And, it's free. And, all kinds of respectable people -- at all levels of the organization -- are doing it.
