Shannon's Dream # 64.
You meet a nice girl. She agrees to go out with you. Are you going to put on some nice clothes and brush your teeth before you pick her up? Good for you.
Now, do me a favour, please. Go to the HR department and tell them to buy some clothes. For the career site. Dress it up before it meets the people you want to work for your firm.
It can't be hard to navigate or boring or the people won't bite. You've got to spend real money to put in blogs, a private-label social network and employee videos.
Candidates want to get info by connecting with people inside the firm. I know, HR won't like it. Access to information is risky. The only time it's done is when it's ordered by the top. But, talk to them anyway. Maybe this time.... who knows. They might even accomodate resume videos. Not!

The next gen career site should allow job-hunters to:
1. Ask the corporate recruiter a question online
2. See other people's questions and remarks about the job
3. Read the company blogs.
4. See the employees' online (Jobster or LinkedIn) profiles
5. See the company's and the recruiter's hiring history.
6. See videos of the workplace on YouTube
These are the things that dreams are made of -- in the Twilight Zone Recruitosphere.

Sell first buy later. Those are rules to live by. If at the end of an exhuative search you decide the person in front of you REALLY is your ideal candidate and they say no! Guess what? It's your fault because you didn't sell them. Don't forget that stars always have choices -- FULL STOP -- AND you're better off taking clothes off than buying new ones.
Expose yourself.
Show your warts. let them know you've got issues. Candi ates will appreciate the honesty and will be far more likely to stick with it when the going gets tough AND it always does sooner or later.
