Recruiters Are Nazis!

If you’ve ever made the mistake of posting your resume on Monster or Workopolis for too long, you’ll get calls from the lowest form of human life also known as recruiters....

In 95% of the cases, these people have no technical knowledge whatsoever...

The sad part is that all these companies like Rogers, Telus, BMO, Royal Bank etc. place their trust in these scumbags’ hands.

Please, please, please.

1. Pick a site that will find your content interesting
2. Highlight your content that benefits its users most.
3. Keep your message short.
4. Resend the email if you don’t hear back from them. Most of these emails are not opened the first time.
5. Do not offer a link in return. Who needs a link from a punk like you?

Are You A Visionary Thought-leader?

Real leaders are backing away from bombast.

People are too willing to assign the descriptor "industry leader" to those in the staffing space who have a platform. I've heard people describe me that way a time or two and it made me uncomfortable.

Barry Diller also finds bombastic titles a bore. The term "visionary" is especially awful.

The first time they said it I thought they were talking about eye charts. I don't see anything full-blown. I never have. I see what interests me.

Are you going to buck the trend and continue to use this term? If so, you got some 'splainin' to do. So give us an example and tell us why.

Actually, I'm not entirely against the term. Anthony J Meaney is a visionary thought leader. My proof? He invented the Recruitosphere.

Warning Against Wordpress

But not against Wordpress hosted.

The admin interface is always so impossibly slow (admittedly it did get better w/ release 2.1) and why can’t the software auto-update. It is so so very trying to upgrade over and over.

You have to back up everything, download this, update that, etc. A blogger spends at least half his time taking care of IT stuff.

The services I am looking most closely at are Typepad, TeraPad, and Wordpress.com (WP’s hosted solution)

Barry Moltz: Too many people think that networking is sticking out your hand to shake another person's hand and simultaneously giving her your business card.

Immediately, she says who she is and what she wants. Real relationships are built over a long period of time.

You need to build trust and that takes time and effort. Don't try to trade on relationships too soon.

Always ask what you can do for that person before asking for yourself. As Tim Sanders says. "be a lovecat" by connecting people of like interests together.

Pick Your Clients

I’m a big believer in only working with clients who I think are a good fit. And no, a decent budget doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a good fit.

I see business relationships in a similar way as other relationships - of mutual benefit. It’s a two way street and if the connection isn’t there I’d prefer to pass on the job.

Pick your clients carefully. If your instinct says a client isn’t for you then listen to it. Don’t be afraid to turn down work.

In my experience something better aways comes along. And more often than not the ones your instinct says to walk away from will be the most difficult, time consuming jobs you’ll ever have
