No one can say I'm not a nice guy because when it comes to awards I don't judge you by your output alone. I also look for the amount of effort that goes into what you do.
So when I give out the award for best networker, I don't always give it to the person who is naturally social like Jerry Albright. I think about those poor people for whom networking is a constant struggle.
Karla Porter has confessed that she is naturally introverted. That doesn't mean she's shy. It means she finds talking to people totally exhausting. So, when she goes home on the weekend she just collapses till Monday.
But no successful networker has made it more clear this past year that she is naturally unsociable than the CincyRecruiter. She prefers the company of horses to people but forces herself to network in order to be successful and encourages others to do the same.
I could give her the award for Best Introverted Networker of 2009. That would show respect for diversity but, no, I'm giving her all the glory as the Best Networker of 2009.
