-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Animal Chat Begins
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jerry_Albright
Today at noon @Animal tries 2 adopt the orphaned job hunters from #HFChat. Watch #AnimalChat (I will probly take over)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Question 1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Animal
Q1: Should your Linkedin profile be a full-fledged resume?
Jerry_Albright
In a shocking coup - I'm taking over #HFChat right now. Let's do it. Forget #AnimalChat
Lin_Dolin
LinkedIn profile is a tease for LI recruiters
Jerry_Albright
What is the phone number to call for #AnimalChat? Don't make it hard for us to find it man.
T_Fig
LinkedIn Profile should be so much more than a resume. Less form constrictions, more personality.
Animal
Can anyone tell me why an LI profile should not be a full resume
TalentTalks
LinkedIn is resource 4 research, not resume Database or job board, tho some treat it as such
Lin_Dolin
How much value have people gotten out of LinkedIn groups?
EmilieMeck
You get out of LinkedIn what you put into it. Involved in discussions, update your status, connect - you will grow ur network
Lin_Dolin
I consider LI profile a brochure, not a full fledged catalog.
Animal
A Linkedin profile shd be a full fledged resume @Lin_Dolin - why not
TalentTalks:
Linkedin is professional networking site; content may have similarities 2 resume, but not same
TomBolt
LI would be more useful if jobseekers and recruiters didn't think of it as a job board. Network, people!
JackalopeJobs
Networking / personality matters too with LI
CJsearch4TO
Every one needs a digital footprint - sound bites ONLY- not a resume #Linkedin
Animal
Why shdnt an Online Profile be a full fledged resume
Animal
If LI is going 2B a warehouse 4 professional profiles why not go whole hog and post all of your professional info there
TomBolt
Resumes get you in the door. LI introduces you to door openers. Apples and Animals comparison.
CJsearch4TO
people have too much ADD to READ a full resume on LinkedIN
Erockfoutch
Do people just use LI to see what the person looks like?
TomBolt
@erockfoutch Still can't tell what ppl look like. Glamor shot profile pics.
Animal
Recruiters want info about potential candidates @CJsearch4TO -- UR saying they just want a thumbnail sketch
CJsearch4TO
yes recruiters need a thumbnail sketch on LinkedIN- good candidates can make them selves look gr8 in few words
TomBolt
You can tailor a resume for a job. You can't change your LI profile every minute.
AvidCareerist
Resumes work best when they're relevant to the prospective position(s).
CJsearch4TO
it's a lame Jobhunting approach to post a resume on LinkedIn - JOB HUNTING not fishing
TalentTalks
If LI was only resume it wld only b used by those in ultra-active jobsearch mode
T_Fig
Resume Is smaller, more compact than LI. The references, degrees of connection, how U market yourself goes beyond resume.
Animal
T_Fig sez an LI profile goes beyond a resume but that doesn't mean it shdnt include a full resume
ReedKremer
I think at some point LI could replace the resume altogether
Lin_Dolin
But then what is your official resume? Will recruiters drop u from consideration when resume & LI don't match?
EmilieMeck
No, it shouldn't. You want to show highlights but leave something to discuss with interviewer. Like your sales pitch.
AvidCareerist:
Put your entire resume on LI. G+ too.
EmilieMeck
@AvidCareerist, Don't agree - leaves nothing new to discuss, elaborate on
AvidCareerist
@EmilieMeck Respectfully disagree. That's like saying a resume leaves nothing to discuss. Good resumes START convos.
Animal
U believe in the lingerie resume on Linkedin, @EmilieMeck - show a little leg so the recruiters want to call you 4 more
EmilieMeck
True. @AvidCareerist: I just think putting it all out there makes the conversation stale. I've been successful giving highlights
CJsearch4TO
What do u think of Job Seeker LinkedIn profiles w header actively seeking a new role?
Lin_Dolin
Does it boil down to what is LinkedIn's purpose? Don't think everyone uses it the same way. 1 size use doesn't fit all.
DavePulse
Candidates believe they don't have to spend the time to explain to the recruiter their skill set or professional growth - if you already have the resume via Linkedin you can do a direct send-out from there without a phone screen
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Question 2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Animal
Q2: -- What is the purpose of being on Linkedin?
ReedKremer
To be seen. At this point it's more weird if you're not, so that has to be a starting point for your online presence
TomBolt
LI purpose is to dialog with professionals about work stuff. Networking can lead to jobs and that's just gravy.
erockfoutch
I say YES - and maybe to find others in company/industry.
CJsearch4TO
@T_Fig is right not a FULL resume and LinkedIn is a tool to track and expand your network not to GET A JOB
EmilieMeck
LinkedIn gives you the ability to virtually "knock" on a hiring manager or recruiters door. Creates opps that weren't there b4
Lin_Dolin
Isn't LinkedIn a public rolodex that anyone can access? Some more than others?
Animal
Linkedin is a resume warehouse - a database
Lin_Dolin
By Rolodex I mean that people can find me because I am on LinkedIn. I rarely use it to connect to other people.
Animal
LI is not a Rolodex - its much more massive than that
JackalopeJobs
LI is to connect, network, expand connections, become involved in your industry. Jobs are nice, but not guaranteed.
Animal
Telling people UR going to link to them after you meet is nonsense - the only thing LI is for is massive searches
TalentTalks
Been using LI 4 7+yrs used 2 refer 2 as online "Rolodex" & keep up w/ pro ntwk w/out hvg current contact info
ReedKremer
It's basically protocol. Business cards are also nonsense, but I give them and receive them
AvidCareerist
LinkedIn can serve many purposes. Each person decides what works best for them. #NoRules
Animal
Linkedin has a primary purpose - finding people you need 4 business purposes
Animal
And to have the largest database and 2B the most findable U simply have to link to as many people as possible
T_Fig
My LinkedIn profile has more potential points of contact than my resume. I use LI to recruit and retain my complete NETWORK
CJsearch4TO
@careerminds: do you hide your contacts? I don't - who does and why?
Careerminds
I can understand why 3rd party recruiters would keep their contacts closed but we dont.
AvidCareerist
LI can serve many purposes. People can do what works for them.
ReedKremer
I'm with @AvidCareerist, LI is very versatile and can be used in a lot of different ways
Animal
Well @ReedKremer you're both wrong - it has a unique value proposition
TalentTalks
I've written LI profiles 4 biz ppl & many never look 4 new job, even get annoyed by so many crooters contacting them - not a rez
animal
Telling people UR going to link to them after you meet is nonsense - the only thing it is for is massive searches
EmilieMeck
It worked gr8 for me listing my job interests when I was unemployed. Never had to bring it up cuz it was out there
animal
Linkedin is Big Data for recruiters, job hunters, sales people etc
Careerminds
@linkedin is a crucial part of our job seeker community and LMS
Lin_Dolin
Should it be obvious in LI profile content?
EmilieMeck
@Lin_Dolin: I added it to the header, as my 'current position'. Seeking <job title>, <industry> opportunities
Lin_Dolin
How much value have people gotten out of LinkedIn groups?
AvidCareerist
I recommend customizing LI profile to who you think will be looking at it.

Question 3
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Animal:
Q3 -- Is Listening the key to being a good conversationalist?
EmilieMeck
What? J/K: RT @animal: Q3 -- Is Listening the key to being a good conversationalist?
JackalopeJobs
Active listening is, imo. And also reading/be aware of what's influencing people day-to-day.
ashforducareers:
Active listening - not just hearing - is key to being a great conversationalist.
CJsearch4TO
listening and hearing are key to being good conversationalists - you gotta read your audience and listening helps intake
TomBolt:
Well, I do know that the other way around doesnt work. Convo is dialog, not monolog.. unless you are Hamlet
TalentTalks
@animal A3) either listening (or yelling)
Animal
Contrary to a lot of ridiculous blog postings - Listening is not the key to being a good conversationalist - Talking is
TomBolt
Face-to-face, look at their eyes... intensely. On phone or online, LISTEN so you get their msg and then ask questions
EmilieMeck
Truly listen - not think about what you will say next. Read, research and being well-rounded in various topics.
ReedKremer
100% yes. Nobody wants to hear you babble, only themselves
meetzman
90-10, listening to talking works best
T_Fig
Listening well AND having something to ask or say.
animal
The key to being a good conversationalist is knowing something interesting = having something to say - not asking questions
TomBolt
Listening, interrupting, then talking <= Works for some ppl
Animal
Listening is over-rated - Content is king
TomBolt
@animal Storytelling... agree.
TalentTalks
have 2 have something 2 say; but listening & observing others essential 2 convo
EmilieMeck
A good conversationalist knows a little bit about everything so they can talk to anyone about something. Has depth & presence
Animal
Don't weasal out of the answer @T_Fig Which is primary - Listening or Talking
animal
Key to being liked is being interesting - not listening #AnimalChat - even a therapist who listens to much is useless
TimsStrategy
Why am I just now learning about #AnimalChat?
TomBolt
@TimsStrategy This is the first one... Glad you could come and bring some class into the discussion
Lin_Dolin
But do you miss out on serendipitous contact when you make it too specific?
T_Fig
Asking good questions can enhance conversation, change minds and sell stuff
ReedKremer
On Wednesday the point was made by @edenchanges about "powerful" questions, that's key but listening comes first
CJsearch4TO
@animal has proven that - RT @JasonGiller you can be a good listener and have conversation without being liked
T_Fig
Listening well AND having something to ask or say.
Animal
Yes @T_Fig a convo requires give and take but being interesting requires good give more than take
T_Fig
@animal To have a conversation, by definition, you need both talking and listening. To be great, content is primary.
Animal
Don't weasal out of the answer @T_Fig Which is primary - Listening or Talking
ResumeStrategy
Oh Lordy, @animal is giving bad advice and I'm dealing w/ a crisis so I don't have time to set him right. Career coaches, help!!
Jerry_Albright
@ResumeStrategy What bad advice? I'll handle this.
Animal
@ResumeStrategy Show's almost over dear - too late
AvidCareerist
@ResumeStrategy Phew! Scary here without you. #animalchat
EmilieMeck
A3 A good conversationalist knows a little bit about everything so they can talk to anyone about something. Has depth & presence
EmilieMeck
Having something interesting to say. Something worthwhile to contribute makes ppl gravitate to you and makes them want to listen
T_Fig
asking good questions can enhance conversation, change minds and sell stuff
ResumeStrategy
@animal Can't let you loose on jobseeker world, it would be havoc. I've blocked next Friday noon for #AnimalChat so it doesn't happen again
TomBolt
Well, I do know that the other way around doesn't work. Convo is dialog, not monolog.. unless you are Hamlet.
@Lin_Dolin
I think I have done it in the past, [included my full profile on LI] gotten no value and now it's just my title. Job history up to date in LinkedIn.
Animal
Hey @Jerry_Albright do you want to do an Aftershow for #AnimalChat -
Jerry_Albright
#$%# No.
END
