Olivier Blanchard was in the French Navy Marines.
The credo there was "make it work."
The intelligence is wrong? It doesn't matter. Make it work.
The insertion routes are compromised? It doesn't matter. Make it work.
You got dropped 15 miles off target? It doesn't matter. Make it work.
There are no problems, only solutions. Find a way.
Most of the time, things don't go your way. The unexpected happens. Obstacle after obstacle will get between you and your goal. That's a given. But no matter what happens, there's still a finish line to cross.
Most people freak out when their plan goes awry. They panic. They feel lost.
The solution: Train for failure. Come up with contingency plans. Learn how to handle disaster. Make your resolution time instantaneous.
Experience is the key. Experience breeds forethought, which reduces uncertainty which reduces fear.
More often than not, projects that appear to have gone smoothly didn't go smoothly at all. Hundreds of fires had to be put out. Thousands of split-second decisions had to be made. There were quick fixes, course adjustments and a folder-full of improvised solutions. That's how it really works.
So, never expect things to work right. You crash, get up, assess the situation, "get back on your bike" and finish the race.
