Girls Shouldn't Drink

Surely there is enough public information available to show teenaged girls and young women that they can get into serious trouble if they drink to excess in public.

And yet in the news today is an awful story. A girl went to a party. She got drunk and had sex with four boys. The Toronto Star says she was raped but the National Post says that she drank so much vodka she doesn't fully remember what went on.

The case was investigated by police but they didn't find enough evidence to charge the boys with rape.

One of these terrible boys took a picture of the sex act and passed it around via email. When the girl went back to school fine Canadian teens called her a slut and boys she didn't know started harrassing her with text messages.

The girl became depressed and committed suicide.

Apparently, she was a smart girl. She got good marks. Why didn't she know for a fact that drinking makes people stupid and that she shouldn't drink to excess with a group of other people who are doing so?

Exodus 34

One day the Lord said to Moses, “Cut two flat stones like the first ones I made, and I will write on them the same commandments that were on the two you broke.

So Moses cut two flat stones like the first ones, and early the next morning he carried them to the top of Mount Sinai, just as the Lord had commanded.

The Lord God came down in a cloud and stood beside Moses there on the mountain. God spoke his holy name, “the Lord.”

Then he passed in front of Moses and called out, “I am the Lord God. I am merciful and very patient with my people. I show great love, and I can be trusted.

I keep my promises to my people forever, but I also punish anyone who sins. When people sin, I punish them and their children, and also their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

Exodus 24

The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on this mountain. Bring along Aaron, as well as his two sons Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of Israel’s leaders. They must worship me at a distance, but you are to come near. Don’t let anyone else come up.”  . . .

Moses and Aaron, together with Nadab and Abihu and the seventy leaders, went up the mountain and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something that looked like a pavement made out of sapphire and it was as bright as the sky.

Even though these leaders of Israel saw God, he did not punish them. So they ate and drank.

Accidental Discovery

Dr. Hofmann first synthesized LSD in 1938 while investigating ergot, a rye fungus, for Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland.

He was searching for a circulatory stimulant and LSD was the 25th in a series of ergot derivatives he concocted; hence the designation LSD-25.

Studies on laboratory animals did not prove significant and scientists at Sandoz quickly lost interest in the drug.

For the next 5 years the vial of LSD gathered dust on the shelf until April 16, 1943.

"I had a strange feeling that it would be worthwhile to carry out more profound studies with this compound."

In the course of preparing a fresh batch of LSD he accidentally absorbed a small dose through his fingertips and soon he was overcome by "a remarkable but not unpleasant state of intoxication … characterized by an intense stimulation of the imagination and an altered state of awareness of the world."

"As I lay in a dazed condition with eyes closed there surged up from me a succession of fantastic, rapidly changing imagery of a striking reality and depth, alternating with a vivid, kaleidoscopic play of colors. This condition gradually passed off after about three hours."

 

A Grown Man Cried

The three of us were seated on the sofa – my grandfather, my grandmother and I – and we watched.

The plane landed. The red carpet was rolled out. Sadat emerged. Menachem Begin and his entourage greeted him.

The anthems were played. Begin stood at attention for Egypt’s anthem. Sadat, an erstwhile enemy of the Jewish state, stood in respectful attention during “Hatikva.”

It was pretty heady stuff.

Suddenly, in the midst of all of this, I heard a sound that I couldn’t quite identify. At first, I thought it was coming from the TV. But it didn’t seem to be.

I looked around the room but saw nothing that could have been making the strange sound.

And then I looked to my left and saw my grandfather weeping. He was a large person, not only in reputation but physically too, and to this day, I remember his blue button-down shirt, soaked with tears.
