The Good Recruiter List - Week 1

Back on December 6, 2015, I announced that I would be creating a Good Recruiter List.

There are a lot of lists of the Top 10 or Top 50 Recruiters on Twitter. These are useful when you want to find an expert.

However, these lists only contain the names of people who publish a lot or speak at conferences.

There are other recruiters, though, working in the trenches who are good at what they do and could offer lots of good advice but they never turn up on these lists because they don't work at creating a public profile.

This Good Recruiter List is going to make them visible too.

I will publish the names of 3 people a week starting with these three.

1. @CathyMannis

Before she became respectable, Cathy Mannis used to be a regular caller on The Recruiting Animal Show. She's too busy now working as a sourcer at Deloitte but she did manage to call in last week and give us some good tool tips. For realz.

2. @Mike_Recruiter

Michael G. Cox is a Recruiting Manager at Dahill, a 500 person division of a Xerox. His Linkedin profile is kind of stuffy. He claims to be working with the
"senior leadership team to develop a thorough understanding of the strategic vision and subsequent staffing needs..." etc etc etc. Luckily, he doesn't talk
like that in real life so he's managed to become one of the go
-to experts on a famous recruiting radio show.

3. @TerryJobs

Terry Hall is a former Marine. Now she's a Senior Recruiter at Providence Health and Services looking for people in Diagnostic Imaging, Cardiology and Respiratory Therapy. She has a nice smile and, with Facebook as my witness, she seems to be a swell mom.

 

High-minded Company Goals Attract Idealists

What drives top employees now is more than just a paycheck. Purpose is a critical driver of talent.

Linkedin looks for employees driven by purpose. Its staff includes 41% who cite self-fulfillment and a desire to serve others as key (according to the 2015 Workforce Purpose index).

Recruiters take note: people who view their work as far more than dollars or promotions perform better on all fronts (according to recent research by NYU and Imperative).

Hire Programmers Who Love Coding

A daycoder writes code 9 to 5, Monday through Friday and does not think about it outside of those times.

Daycoders won't be motivated to learn the best way of doing things and will just do what they've always done

Daycoders are also difficult to retain without a steady stream of raises and and perks since they are there for the money, not for the work.

During crunch time or on a project that requires tricky techniques, rare skills, you need someone who loves coding.

This passion will be obvious during the interview. Candidates who get excited when you talk about your project or who are talking about their past projects have it.

 

 

Programmers Have to Communicate Well

Social media folks, web developers and UX designers don't just sit in front of the computer. They need to be able to sit down at a meeting and advise senior leaders on protocol for a new project.

Or they need to be able to pick up the phone and firmly and tactfully chew-out a vendor partner who's not delivering.

They might have the best portfolio or coding ability on the planet but if they can't interact with others, they aren't a fit for my clients.

So I'm not going waste my time emailing someone who isn't interested in talking with me on the phone. Maybe they're afraid to talk or they're just not used to it but no chat, no opportunity.

Tell Candidates When They Interview Well

People can't tell how well they do in interviews. Some think they did poorly when, in fact, they did well.

When candidates think they failed the interview, they are less likely to want to work with you.
First they self-flagellate, then they soften the pain by rationalizing that they didn’t want to work in your company anyway.

If you want to save these candidates, give positive feedback immediately (or as soon as possible).

 

How To Set Goals

Successful people don't do what other people tell them to. So don't set goals to please other people. Do what works for you.

Set goals that help you feel great about yourself. 6 month goals are too far away. 90 day goals are better. The closer finish line makes your current actions seem more significant.

 

Bad Work Habits Caused Depression

I remember reading a book that said a great consultant spent 20% of their time on “overhead” and 80% of their time on substantive work for their clients.

As long as I was only spending 20% of my time on things I wasn’t interested in, I was fine.

However, I’d somehow gotten the ratios flipped – I was spending only 20% of my time on the stimulating stuff and 80% of my time on stuff I viewed as unimportant.

I was only stimulated by about 20% of the stuff I was doing. This led to a deep boredom that I didn’t realize, because I was so incredibly busy and tired from the amount of stuff I was doing.

While the 20/80 problem was the start, the real root cause of the depression was the boredom.

 

Online Learning Websites

From Business Insider: 37 websites for learning a new skill.

James Guske: I joined Khan Academy. And I worked through two of their programming courses.

Stephanie Weiss: My favorite is Coursera. I took a couple of Python classes and a few literature classes. Right now I'm actually using DuoLingo to fix my Spanish since I speak "Tex Mex" more than Spanish. It's a fabulous app -- Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn an additional language. I like it a lot more than Rosetta Stone (and you can't beat free!)

Stephanie Weiss:  https://techprep.fb.com helps you figure out which technical prep is best for you. Even has resources for parents. We used this to ID the best resource for my daughter to learn coding for her little robots that now have taken over my house.
