Resumes, Interviews and Branding

A recruiter might find you on the basis of your profile's keywords. To do that she really doesn't have to know much about the work you do.  She might not even know the right topics to investigate when she speaks to you.

This means that you have to give her the information she needs to represent you properly to an employer. You have to educate her during the interview.  

Founders of startups face the same challenge when they speak to reporters who don't understand their hi-tech products. So, let's compare some job hunting tips from Johanna Rothman and Rich Stone to the recommendations  Caryn Marooney,Facebook's Head of Tech Communications has for startup CEOs.

As a founder, you know more about your topic than anyone in the world. If you’re talking to a reporter and you just answer their questions without telling them what’s important about your company, shame on you.

Brand image is your lump of clay and you have to go out there and make it into something beautiful. Respond to their questions, but then tell them what’s important in every answer, because they don’t know, or even how to ask.

Johanna Rothman, Manage Your Job Search

For every line on your résumé, explain the value. If your build system automation work on a project saved three-person weeks every quarter, you would say something like this:

"Saved three person-weeks every quarter via automation by delivering scripts for the build system."

That’s still a little wimpy. As a first draft, that might be good enough... However, if you are refining your résumé, or you haven’t worked for too long, you want to craft each line on your résumé. How can you clarify this line to specify your value?

"Saved three person-weeks every quarter by automating scripts for our git-based build system. We transitioned from SVN to git and I automated the scripts."

Johanna also points us to Rich Stone

Don’t let your experience look like a job description. I see a lot of “responsible for this” or “participated in that” bullets.

If you are hiring a QB for your football team, do you hire a QB who was responsible for calling plays, throwing passes and participated in running the offense? or do you hire one who scored 30 points per game, rushed for 100 yards, threw for 350 yards, had a 75% pass completion ratio over that last 3 seasons?

It's a bunch of cliches that everyone puts in their resumes without offering any proof. It's pure bragging.

In addition, he has capitalized Results for no reason at all.

Resume Tips

Lifehack.org is offering resume tips. Some are good. Some are rotten.

1. No odd fonts.

Don't get creative. Good advice.

2. Certifications, designations & relevant experience.

This guy claims that employers care more about your skills than anything else. So he encourages you to list your skills at the top of the resume.

But, people can claim a skill that they haven't used for a long time. So what's important is their specific, dated, experience.

So list the experience that is relevant to the job at the top of the resume in a summary section. You can also list this in bullet points in the cover letter.

Then list your certifications. If you need a licence for this job you might as well show yours right off the bat to get your resume into the short list.

3. Don't trust automatic spell check.

4. Job Descriptions

This guy says that the hiring manager can look at your title and know what you do. So, all you have to put in the job description are the things you were doing that she wouldn't know from your title. For instance, if you did jobs that normally belong to a higher pay category.

This is silly. The hiring manager isn't going to be the first person to do your job. A recruiter might see it first who has no previous experience working with people like you.

If you don't supply a detailed job description that he can match against the buzz words he's looking for, you're not going to be chosen.

5. Dates

This guy says that employers don’t care about the dates you worked. Well, even if it was true (and it isn't) recruiters care. So take them seriously.

6. Don’t leave big gaps in your timeline.

People want to know why someone who is serious about her career wasn't working. Explain it by listing what you did.

The Branded Resume

Who Is Debbie Dib,
- a certified personal branding strategist

Length
- your resume has to be easy to read on a Blackberry
- that means two pages tops

- your other info can be shoved onto "collateral documents"
- eg. a case study of your top accomplishment, lists of speaking
  engagements, achievements, deals

Focus
- a personal brand is a well-defined image of you
- a clear, memorable image cannot be diversified
- you have to pick one or two strengths and market yourself on these
- your other skills are reduced to secondary status as value-adds

- hiring managers are more interested in an expert
  than a jack-of-all trades and master of none
- so she advises us to be brave enough to limit our offerings

Do You Still Need a Resume? Yes

Debbie Dib says the resume is losing its role as the primary tool in a job search.

But that's not true. It isn't. You might have a blog or a website or a video profile but I'm a headhunter and when I call you about a job, you'd better have a resume.

How else am I going to get a quick overview of what you've done and, based on that, assess what you can do? I have to have something to pass on to my client, too. And to anyone else involved in the search.

And, if I don't have a resume, what am I going to use? A LinkedIn profile? That's just a resume online, nothing more, nothing less. And I love LinkedIn; every recruiter does -- but it's got some strikes against it.

1. It's got the LinkedIn format which includes a lot of junk on the right side of the page.

2. At present, LinkedIn is still foreign to a lot of people. A hiring manager might not recognize it as a resume.

3. Many people who register on LinkedIn don't recognize its potential value, either, so they don't put a lot of details or stable contact information into their profiles.
