Introduction: Job-Hunters.
Don't touch that dial, ladies and gentlemen. You've come to the right place. I'm the Recruiting Animal and the next hour is going to be a virtual psychedelic trip into the world of recruiting. You've never taken LSD? Well, listen to this show and you won't have any more questions.
To start off today, I want to talk about job hunters. You know, I'm a recruiter and people often refer their friends to me when they're looking for a job. And one guy called me last week who knows someone in my family. (I don't know who but he says he knows someone).
So, I looked at his resume and I gave him some tips and then I pointed him to some good books by people I know. And, a day later, he sends me an email that says, "Keep in touch."
Wait a second, I said. I'm helping him - for nothing - and he's telling me to keep in touch? I'm supposed to check up on him? Please!
And let me tell you about another guy. I have a very nice friend. And she married someone she hardly knew. I know, it's unbelievable. But he was a member of some spiritual group she was going to. So, she assumed that they had a lot in common.
Apparently, he was some kind of engineer but he was having trouble finding a job. So we all went out for dinner. And, at the end of the evening, I offered to help the guy. And he said, "Good, call me to make an appointment."
I said to myself, "Me, call him?". Now, do I have to tell you my friend isn't married to this guy anymore? And it's not because I didn't get him a job. There was plenty of other stuff. So, here's some good advice: don't marry someone you don't know.
One more example. My cousin referred a guy to me. Forty years old. He'd been running a clothing store since he got out of university and now he wanted to be a pharmaceutical sales rep. Does that seem likely to you? Not to me. But he didn't take it very well when I told him so. Now maybe he knew better than I did. But I don't know. I never heard the end of the story.
Which brings me to our guest for today. His name is Scotty Williamson. And Scotty, after spending hours on end counselling his friends about their careers, started a new blog called CareerWayMark.com
And if you want to find out about that get out the valium. Because you're about to take a trip into the magic world of recruiting radio. With me, your guide, The Recruiting Animal, on The Recruiting Animal Show!!!
Scotty Hates HR.
Animal: Do the HR people know that you hate them?
Scotty: I don't hate them. I don't hate them at all.
Animal: Here's what you wrote on your blog. "Those who can do, do; those who can't end up working in HR."
Scotty: Yes I said that.
Animal: They don't mind hearing that?
Scotty: I have friends who do mind and I have friends and colleagues who cringe a little when they read that.
Animal: "Your company's HR department is not your friend."?
Scotty: That's a fact.
